I have never enjoyed that we are not the “main character” in oblivion more than I do right now.
Here begins my essay about the similarities of Ron and the hero of kvatch. Feel free to skip lol.
Another cool thing I thought about was that some (crazy but cool) fan theories say Dumbledore is actually Ron from an alternate timeline where Harry doesn’t defeat Voldemort and everything is so messed up that Ron has to go back in time to guide Harry in defeating Voldemort, becoming Dumbledore. I can’t remember the evidence to support the theory, but I think that’s how the theory goes.
Anyways, the reason I bring this up is that in oblivion Spoiler Alert, I suppose the hero of kvatch becomes the mad god sheogorath and, essentially, surpasses the main character of the game (Martin septim) in terms of power and respect, despite not being “the destined one.” Similarly, if we take the Harry Potter fan theory as canon (which it isn’t, obviously), Dumbledore/Ron is an individual of great power when compared to the protagonist of Harry Potter (Harry Potter himself).
So, in both stories, the “guy helping the main guy” is stronger than the actual main character.
Related to that connection is that both Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath possess this great power but pay for that power with damnation, essentially. Ron had to live through a doomed timeline (probably saw everyone he loved killed) to become Dumbledore, a person most wizards consider to be a power that no one can come close to. Most likely, Ron/Dumbledore was a broken person at that point. In the same way, the hero of kvatch has to give up their humanity (or elvenanity or beastanity) and sanity to become sheogorath, a literal god. In the end, they succumb to the madness of sheogorath.
Yet, in both oblivion and Harry Potter, despite their power, Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath are unable to defeat the big bad of their universes at the time, Voldemort and mehrunes Dagon, respectively. (Obviously, the hero of kvatch becomes sheogorath after the events of the base game, canonically, but I’m trying to write an argument gosh dang it!) But we know that, based on their power, Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath should be able to defeat or, at the very least, stand a better chance at defeating the big bad of their universes than their chosen one counterparts. After all, who would be better equipped to defeat a god? Another god or an armored priest with an amulet? Similarly, who would be better equipped to defeat the world’s greatest dark wizard? A master wizard (who has already fought the dark wizard to a standstill before) or a teenage boy who’s greatest qualification (besides a prophecy) is that he is able to learn a few new spells outside of strict classroom hours? If you agree with me, it would be the hero of kvatch/sheogorath and Dumbledore/Ron, respectively. But, again, they are not able to defeat the big bads because they are not the chosen ones.
It’s almost like the power that they gained is worthless simply because they are not the chosen one.
However, their roles in their stories are incredibly vital to the success of the chosen ones. Without Dumbledore’s guidance and protection, Harry would have died multiple times over before being fit to face Voldemort. And without the hero of kvatch/sheogorath, Martin septim would still be back in his temple and/or dead.
So, what gives? Why are the people truly responsible for saving the world just supporting characters? Well, I think it’s because the stories are trying to tell us that there is a difference between being the destined one and having the will of a hero.
One way to think of it is like this: the big bads are a lock and the destined ones are a key. By themselves, nothing will happen. The lock will remain locked (or as the big bads do in the stories: being bad, killing innocents, etc.). And the key will remain a key (the only one able to defeat the big bad). However, again, the key can not unlock the lock by itself. This is where the side characters, like Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath come into play. They are the hand that turns the key inside the lock. The hand represents the drive, motivation, spirit, or, as I was calling it earlier, will to see good done and evil defeated. The will of a hero.
Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath tower over the protagonists in terms of power because that power represents their true importance to the story and how impactful their actions are. Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath are more heroic than the protagonists because they had the courage to stand up to evil, even when that evil was not directly threatening them. (Both Martin septim and Harry Potter were targeted by their big bads before they knew that they were the “hero” and, by the time they figured out, it was more a question of survival, albeit with selfless intentions. Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath were never targeted specifically until they began to stand against evil. And while Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath were thrusted into events due to their close proximity to the heroes of their stories, they chose to remain and, in many ways, lead the fight against the evil they were facing.)
In the end, Dumbledore/Ron and the hero of kvatch/sheogorath were not defined by their limitations (not being the destined ones), but by their wills to see the right thing done (the world being saved). These stories are, essentially, inspirational messages. You are the hero of the story. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the gifts that others have. You don’t need them because you will become something so great that you will outshine all those around you, if you choose to. You are not forced to. No one will make you change your story for the better. And there is no “secret gift” inside you or destiny forcing that change. There’s just you. And you can be as great or as small as you choose to be. You can choose to remain a escapee from prison or you can become the literal mad lad god (hero of kvatch). You can choose to accept the suffering of life and never do anything about it or you can defy all expectations, go back in time, become the greatest wizard the world has ever seen, and guide your best friend to victory (Ron).
In conclusion, side characters are the best.
