  1. I think the hunns in Total War Attila should be at number 1…. I don't know wether it is a bug or not but i've played it a couple of times and when you get the message about Attila comming of age and taking control of the armies… he simply doesn't … and after you have defeated him about 3 or 5 times he doesn't gerenerate so you are not able to kill him, and you have to wait till he dies of natural causes… all the wile the huns just regenerate full stack after full stack… it's really frustrating

  2. god it is just so fucking annoying when in say Total War Rome 2 I attack a 1 – 2 province minor and I stack wipe an army but then in ~3 – 4 turns they come back with another 20 stack of elite and heavy spearmen. I mean for christ sakes I was just paying a campaign as Massilia and I ended up stack wiping an entire 18 20 stacks from the Pictones and 16 20 stacks from the Arveni and god knows how many fucking Roman stacks I wiped. Of-course non of them wanted peace despite all this

  3. Napoleon is literally immortal in TW:N, Literally faced him in manual battle 4 times and killed his general body guard fully every time and he comes back with an army spawned out of thin air.

  4. For me I don't think I ever noticed how badly the AI was a cheating bastard until I played the original Shogun 1 back in the day. It would get absurd because you would be winning the campaign and smashing factions down to their last settlement, beating them down on a turn to finally invade on the next, and on the next turn you'd be facing a full stack out of nowhere once again.

It used to frustrate the absolute hell out of me. And this was on normal difficulty.

  5. My TW cheat, any game. Slow build. Send out scouts. Wait for some crazy group send an army or 2 on a long rampage thru several provinces. Come in behind and take all the empty devastated cities. Rinse and repeat.

  6. Played RTW and was one turn short of Tarentum where the AI had one unit. Next turn AI recruited 3 units and a ship unit. I was so pissed of!

  7. Honestly, I’m fine with the Empire of Warhammer 2 being that gigantic beast that engulfs a big portion of the map right away. That kinda what they’re sold as. If you want to take them down, you’ll have to fight… well, an empire !
Now, if it was all RandomFaction McGee who always confederate and every races ended up with just a single faction, I’d call that a game’s problem but I’ve always seen the confederation thing as Reikland’s own playstyle. It’s not a very agressive nor traitorous faction and if you don’t feel like fighting them, it’s relatively easy to pass treaties with the Empire as long as you’re not scummy yourself…

And if the chaos invasion is effectively turned into a serious threat in Warhammer 3, you’ll see that Reikland will need to be able to quickly form that great Empire in order to survive…

For once, I embrace the AI cheating.

Debuff the dwarves though, their faction’s AI is just ridiculous !

  8. Imagine playing against an AI opponent in chess where everytime you take a piece from the opponent it respawns in 5 turns, the opponent can make a move that leaves their king in check so long as simultaneously spawn a pawn to block the line of attack will block the check, the opponent's pawns can move backwards, and after their pawn makes six moves in any direction it automatically gets promoted to a queen.

  9. A lot of possible AI techniques are described in Russell and Norvig. Having a functional AI that can take incomplete information into account, prioritise whether to move through or encamp to avoid attrition, and optimise build orders and recruitment are definitely possible. It is just difficult to make such an AI process the decision-making search fast enough. So usually we use heuristics to simplify the problem and reduce the search space, but these cheats are just easy ways to do so and while plainly ignoring the game mechanics that apply to the player.

  10. Difficulty should be managed through faction asymmetry. For example in Rome 1 Egypt is the easiest non-roman faction to play, and Numidia one of the hardest. Similar arguments for Shogun 2. If they really wanted they could exaggerate these differences so that people who want more of a challenge can play the harder factions, while those who just want an average difficulty can play the regular factions. In either case, the mechanics can be kept consistent and meaningfully applied to both the player and the AI factions.

  11. Well the shogun 2 AI needs every cheat it can get, because you can basically win every battle with the most basic units. I used to have 1/2 stack of horse archers followed by a stack of infantry army (ashigaru + archers). Attacking with the horse army first, retreating and then just wiping the enemy stack with 0 loses.

  12. How about ai exploits? Like in M2TW when ai sally out with infantry, moment your battering ram is in place, or rome tw, when you wanna nuke barbarians with onagers, and they hide units around those annoying, huge, indestructible trees, and so on? 🙂

  13. Shogun 2 AI Doomstack spamming.

After Realm Divide when I see Iyo, Awa, Sanuki, and Tosa which is 90% of the time under Chosokabe control I cringe. I know I will have to amass a huge naval blockade and a large invasion force. But yeah doomstack spamming.

  14. Total War AI is just stupid. Making them cheat so hard is no excuse. In Starcraft 2 the AI only starts cheating on Elite difficulty while the rest of the Ai-Settings just play "smart". I don't believe it's a good why do build good Ai when you just make them cheat having 3 Armies on 1 or 2 Towns. It's just fucking ridiculous and annoying.

In Warhammer 2 it seems like this one dude doesn't even have a city and just builds troops loots my city but runs away like a bitch when my army shows up. While smart it's just fucking annoying.

Playing against cheaters in Multiplayer games isn't fun, and I don't see how it is fun in singleplayer games either.
Admittingly I am fairly new to the Total War genre, but I played strategy games for over a decade now, and not completely hopeless in these kind of games.

  15. I think that an AI should have a even playing fileld to the player. However the AI should have an very good understanding of how the game workers without them being buffed. Also like to add In rome 1 if you play any faction other than rome and don't take rome out straight away they start to steam roller over you. Remember years ago play as Britain slowly built up strong armies move down to rome and suddenly had 2 julia armies attack which get defeated then another 5 then more each wave of rome attacks got stronger and stronger, not knowing where they are getting the money to fund these armies and how and where they are training the armies are. Sometimes i think the ai is aloud to spawn in armies from nothing. There should be away that an AI learns from other players to develop its tactics also learns from yourself from previous campaigns. So that the ai adapts to you yourself, or something on those lines.(adaptable AI).

  16. Mannfred, because if you siege as Isabella, he will pop up with a full stack at drakenhoff "early game at like turn four."
Edit: it will not be a Manfred lord full stack.

  17. Honestly I wish there was a mod to remove the Total War Warhammer experience cheat. I don't mind money cheats allowing the AI to throw more armies at me, but I hate cheats that affect unit quality.

  18. also in Rome 2 army limits aren't a thing for the AI. they can have 1 settlement and have never expanded but be able to recruit 4 armies which is impossible for the player. and no i am not talking about them previously losing territory, but them freshly recruiting new armies when they only have 1 settlement. e.g. whenever i play as an eastern faction and have an empire in modern day iran, and i go to war with the Arabian factions like gerrhea or main, it's common for me to see them have 4 full stack armies even though they have never expanded. even if the troops are shit, it's still a pain due to auto resolve favouring numbers most of the time.

  19. On my current campaign in war Hammer 2, I wiped out an entire faction except one army.. IN ONE TURN, they captured 10 settlements… No fucking clue HOW

  20. Shogun 2 is still one of the hardest legendary runs to me anyway. Usually by turn 5 I have about 5-9 enemies with doomstacks approaching. If I make it to turn 20 I see doomstacks approaching from across the map and usually just about everyone hates me lol

  21. Where cheating is kinda apparent to me:
Rome 1's Egypt just spams full stack armies 24/7
All of Attila, literally al of it. The factions get a ton of free full stack armies no matter how small and sail them right over to your capitol out of nowhere, they get more money, their diplomacy somehow works with other AI factions who should be butchering them, and they'll declare war on you for no reason

  22. It is wrong to call those cheats.
Game AI can not plan ahead. It never could. It lives 100% in the current turn/game tick. If we ever figure out planning ahead, it would be a big step towards AGIs.
    Those are "AI stupidity offsets".
